Following its first opening in March in Berlin, the Dynamic Memory Lab exhibition “Cycles of Decolonisation” will next be presented at the Goethe-Institut Madrid on 18 June 2025, as part of the third Deconfining conference “Towards pluralistic voices – On funding systems and the work on archives in European-African cultural relations”
“Cycles of Decolonisation” will be officially opened in the presence of its co-curator, Dr. Cátia Severino. As part of the opening, artists from new artistic residencies – developed in collaboration with Spanish cultural research centres—will present their works within the framework of the Dynamic Memory Lab, contributing contemporary perspectives to the shared process of rethinking memory and coloniality.
As part of the conference programme, Max Czollek, co-curator of the CPPD, will be presenting the CPPD as an intercultural European initiative that engages with artistic, civil society, and educational approaches to pluralistic remembrance.

Culture, as a form of collective expression and shared memory, holds the power to reconnect communities with often neglected or misrepresented historical narratives. Fostering meaningful dialogue demands diverse voices and multidimensional perspectives. These guiding principles shape the 3rd Deconfining Conference, which explores the political nuances of deconfinement in African-European cultural relations, with a focus on funding systems, archival practices, and memory work.

“Historical responsibility cannot be voted away.” With these words, the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation called on the federal and state governments last Sunday to legally safeguard the independence of memorial sites – particularly in Saxony-Anhalt – by: through funding structures that ensure these institutions remain operational even in the event of a politically motivated withdrawal of state funding; through the targeted involvement of smaller memorial sites and local initiatives; and through the expansion of existing networks for joint educational work, legal advice and public support in the event of attacks on the institutions and their staff.
