Digital Remembrance. Plural Perspectives – Chemnitz Study Trip

Future 500 is inviting 20 emerging European leaders to take part in our study trip “Digital Remembrance. Plural Perspectives” in Chemnitz, Germany.

In a Europe marked by growing polarisation, radicalisation and contested narratives, our workshop will explore how digital tools and interdisciplinary approaches can support inclusive memory cultures. The programme is designed as a European networking space that brings together participants and experts from academia, the arts, politics, and civil society to co-develop innovative sociopolitical strategies. Drawing on quantitative research into social conflict and opinion polarisation, the workshop will empower participants to develop tangible responses that foster democratic resilience and pluralistic remembrance across Europe.

This year’s European Capital of Culture, Chemnitz is a city of contradictions: home to one of Germany’s largest Vietnamese diasporas and known for its vibrant plural communities, it also stands in the shadow of far-right extremism and its connection to the NSU terror network. As a city in the former GDR, Chemnitz is additionally grappling with how to integrate East German memory into narratives of nationhood and Europe. As one of many sites of negotiation across Europe, Chemnitz wrestles with the question of how European and national identities might be shaped in the future. This complex urban reality makes it an ideal place to explore how remembrance culture can be reimagined in an inclusive and forward-looking way.

In collaboration with TWON, Offener Prozess, Chemnitz Open Space, the Coalition for Pluralistic Public Discourse (CPPD) and Dagesh, participants will engage with Chemnitz as a living case study. Through workshops, guided tours and public events, the city becomes a shared space for critical reflection, co-creation and exchange.

Costs & Logistics

• Accommodation and half board during the programme will be covered.
• Travel costs can be reimbursed up to €300 (2nd class only).
• More detailed information about travel costs and reimbursement will be provided after the selection process.
