About the exhibition “Between Protection and Fragility”
Sukkot, the Jewish festival of tabernacles, reminds us of the fragility of human existence and the search for protection in an uncertain world. The sukkah, a temporary, open and permeable structure, symbolises a paradoxical state: protection that is never absolute, but always temporary and precarious. It is precisely in this temporary nature that a central idea of Sukkot becomes apparent: the awareness that human life and all our achievements are fragile and exist in a larger context.
In a time of global crises, marked by war, flight, displacement and climate catastrophe, the millennia-old symbolism and tradition of Sukkot take on a new urgency. They refer to social realities such as forced migration, the lives of marginalised groups in urban areas, or the fragile refuge of privacy amid socio-political tensions.
The exhibition ‘Between Protection and Fragility’ takes up these central themes and motifs of Sukkot and presents current works by various Dagesh artists. In their works, the artists address topics such as migration, boundaries, materiality, memory and the precarious balance between security and freedom from a contemporary, multidimensional perspective. In doing so, they ask what it means today to seek protection – physically, psychologically, spiritually.
The exhibition is part of the Dagesh Studio on the Road series and is being organised by Dagesh in cooperation with Tage der Jüdischen Kultur Chemnitz e.V.
