Trigger warning: violence, terror, antisemitism, racism, misogyny
First, a reminder and some context: on 9 October 2019, an anti-Semitic, racist and misogynistic terrorist attack took place in Halle. The perpetrator first attempted to break into the synagogue in the Paulusviertel neighbourhood, where Yom Kippur, the holiest Jewish holiday, was being celebrated that day. In front of the locked door, he shot Jana L., a passer-by who spoke to him in an act of civil courage. He then drove on to the Kiezdöner kebab shop and murdered Kevin S. there.
In this episode, Ismet Tekin, who survived the attack, and Yamin Hamid, who has stood in solidarity with the survivors ever since, do not focus on the day of the attack and the act itself. Instead, they discuss questions of pluralistic remembrance practices. What forms of remembrance have developed in Halle since 2019 – and which have not? The focus is on the Tekiez Room: a place of remembrance, commemoration, resistance and coming to terms with the present and the future.
The discussion also ties in with the panel discussion ‘Remembrance in Conflict’ held as part of the CPPD Festival in June 2025, which was organised in collaboration with TEKIEZ, ‘Space for Remembrance and Solidarity’ in Halle.
