Networking Event

Following the first stop in Halle in June, we would like to continue creating spaces for concrete exchange and joint work with the networking meeting on 20 September in Rostock and continue our joint work. Our goal is to connect institutions, organisations and actors within the field of memory politics and culture, thereby creating synergies between topics, resources and projects. The networking meeting is part of the CPPD festival »MEMORY MATTERS«.

 

Workshop 1: Excursion to the  Sonnenblumenhaus (Lichtenhagen Archiv)

In 1992, racist attacks in Rostock-Lichtenhagen made history. But what remains? In cooperation with the documentation centre ‘Lichtenhagen im Gedächtnis’ (Lichtenhagen in Memory), this tour takes you to various historical and symbolic locations in the Hanseatic city that are connected to the 1992 pogrom in Lichtenhagen. Using the memorial ‘Gestern Heute Morgen’ (Yesterday Today Tomorrow) by the artist group Schaum, we examine the perspectives and actions of the historical actors, focusing on the perspectives of the affected Roma from Romania. We want to discuss how the pogrom could have happened and what consequences and effects the event has had to this day. We examine the current culture of remembrance and discuss what an appropriate social response to the event should look like.

 

Workshop 2: Guided tour of the exhibition ‘Lebenswege – vietnamesische Rostocker*innen erzählen’

After the racist riots in Lichtenhagen in 1992, the Vietnamese community living in Rostock decided to take their fate into their own hands and seek contact with the German residents of Rostock. In October 1992, they founded the association Diên Hông – Together Under One Roof e.V. After more than 30 years, the association has evolved and, since 1997, has been open to everyone – regardless of origin or background. Vietnamese culture continues to play a special role in this, alongside many other topics. In this exhibition, Vietnamese women from Rostock talk about their journeys to Germany, their work, families and everyday lives – then and now. Accompanying this, we talk to representatives of Dien Hong about memory, racism and community building. How does it feel to live between arriving and belonging?

 

Dynamic Memory Lab

The Dynamic Memory Lab is a dynamic space for remembrance. A participatory exhibition. A place of lived plurality. As a laboratory dedicated entirely to remembrance, it is dynamic, flexible, open and unfinished. It invites visitors to share, pause, discuss, rethink and reflect on what memory is and what society can be. The Dynamic Memory Lab Nước Đức focuses on Vietnamese-German migration history and explores the question of how history is remembered and told – or suppressed and concealed.

EPNA | Podcast: Episode 10

The EPNA Autumn Workshop in Rome brought together practitioners from across Europe to explore the issue of antisemitism in Italy. As the host of the oldest Jewish community, Italy is a very interesting case study from historical and political perspectives. Learning at the workshop took place through presentations on the Italian case and a panel discussion which brought together policymakers to discuss the topic of building trust across sectors in order to combat antisemitism. Furthermore, the workshop provided participants with skills training and opportunities to engage in active exchange with local organisations.
